Notes
*Title: Impressions either bear no title (I and II State impresions are generally untitled -- see below) or are titled at the bottom of the sheet edge (1930, numbered impressions -- see below). Most Fiene nudes are untitled but inscribing a title at the bottom edge of the sheet was an occasional practice of Fiene, especially in 1930-31 for nudes as well as other subjects (See Bather and Spring). **Date, Edition and States: Some impressions dated "30" are untitled, unnumbered, and annotated "State I." One impression, dated "30," is untitled, bears no state indication, but is numbered "2/4" (PhMA). Beyond these early pre-edition impressions, there appear to be two editions of 30 impressions each: One edition of 30 is dated "30," numbered x/30 and titled at the bottom of the sheet; the other is dated "31," is untitled and annotated "II State [x]/30." Although the 1931 edition is untitled, at least two impression dated "31" are titled l.l. just below the image and unnumbered. Final conclusions regarding the dates, editions and states of this print are as yet not fully determined.
Impressions outside the edition: Beside the unnumbered impressions noted above, one impression from outside the edition is dedicated, l.c., "To George C. Miller with thanks for the fine printing." (See immediately below.) George Miller was Fiene's longtime printer for lithographs. Paper: The PhMA impression is on japan; the NYPL and most others are on wove paper with "RIVES FRANCE" watermark. Reproduced in: Contemporary Prints, October 1931; Prints, Nov. 1931; Fifty Prints of the Year, 1931-2. |
